Yesterday, we went downtown for the Annual Safeway BBQ Battle. It totally felt like a BBQ battle on the Food Network. There were about 40 teams there competing for the best BBQ. They all had their tents and e-z-ups set-up with all kinds of crazy grills and good luck charms. A few of the teams, like our local favorite BBQ restaurant Old Glory (best sweet tea!), Famous Dave's, and Johnsonville Brats, were actually selling barbecue. There were tons of BBQ vendors as well as traditional festival foods (funnel cakes, food on sticks, frozen lemonade) and most of them were giving free samples! We sampled our way around all of the tents and then got in line for the mother of all sample tents... the Safeway sample tent. I thought it was hilarious that as we got in the line, we were given free samples of Alka Selzer!

I guess they assumed that sampling over 25 different foods and beverages might cause one to develop an upset stomach!!
Here are a few pics of the sample tent.

Delicious! We were so full by the end of the day, we didn't have room for dinner! Plus, we got a bunch of schwag... bags of chips, packets of BBQ sauce, chipotle tobasco, and burger seasoning, snack packs, and the best of all, palmolive potholders!
The teams compete for big cash prizes, but we weren't interested in that! We had a great time eating up samples and hording schwag!
DC is so random! We love it!
By the way, my mandevilla sprouted new flowers yesterday!!
